Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade draws inspiration from A Thousand and One Nights, the legendary collection of Middle Eastern folktales filled with voyages, princes, festivals, and mythical adventures. At the center is Scheherazade herself, whose stories captivate the Sultan night after night and ultimately save her life.
In this live recording from November 2025, the Charleston Symphony brings Rimsky-Korsakov’s richly colored score to life with cinematic sweep and storytelling power. The solo violin returns throughout as the voice of Scheherazade, weaving through music that evokes the sea, Sinbad’s ship, wandering princes, love stories, festive marches, and a dramatic shipwreck.
